These poems have grown out of that instinct. The canopies utilize a series of triangulated, sandwiched wood beams that form a concave biwing at the main entry, bringing rainwater through an open triangular occulus and into a bioswale.A simpler system of linear canopies connect all the buildings on the campus, to encourage outdoor ambulation during peiods of frequent rain and snow. for the International Archistart Design Competition, in collaboration with Matthew Philbrook. This passively heated and cooled 215 sf structure utilized a manual mass wall to moderate seasonal temperature swings. This mountaineering shelter would be one of many along the difficult intricate Italian trail system through the Lepine Mountains, near the small village of Carpineto Romano. Round windows reference the naval history of the city and the Seattle Children’s brand. A skintled brick texture responds to changes in plan to make room for an access road, a perforated screen animates the facade with filtered daylight throughout the day, and colorful columns lean and support a lively entrance canopy. A long effort with many talented hands and multiple site studies. I was able to be a part of the design process from concepts through construction.
